I Found a Free Laptop Offer At www.laptophq.org But Is It Real?

I found a company that provides a free laptop and they claim that all I have to do to receive it is to provide my name, address and social security number and sign the receipt. My questions are, “Is this safe? Can they ruin my credit? Am I obligated to pay for this laptop somehow? Why do they need my social security number? Can I return the laptop if I read the contract and don’t like the deal?”

The questions asked by this gentleman are common questions people ask when they learn about any of these free laptop programs. Unfortunately, there are no hard line answers that cover all of the offers. The fact is, some of the offers are real and some of them are not. The ones that are real are going to require that you purchase something else from the company in order to receive the free laptop. If you fail or refuse to go through with the purchase, they are going to ruin your credit and you certainly don’t want that to happen.

A NAS Failure Means Trouble

Almost by definition NAS device failure tends to be more critical than other storage devices going down. The reason being of course that an NAS is typically accessed by many users. This greatly increases the pressure on the IT people to get the device functioning again safely and effectively. The trouble is that for a NAS device this is a far from straightforward business.
First of all, if we assume the failure was due to the NAS controller itself then certainly you can take the hard drive (or drives) out and attempt to analyse them. The problem here is that the NAS device uses a proprietary file system which you will not be able to access without specialised knowledge. In other words you will not see your users’ data.
Potentially even worse of course is if the failure is due to a physical failure of one of the hard drives inside. Where this is the case you are going to have to seek expert help in order to effect an NAS recovery.

RAID is Not the Final Answer

So you think your company’s RAID is the last word in protection for your valuable data. But you may still need the services of a RAID recovery company at some time. The reason is that while such systems are designed for partial failure, they can still fall prey to human error. This can take the form of failed back-ups (meaning that the safety net has been removed) combined with any one of a number of ways in which the RAID system itself can fail.

Firstly, it is more common than you might imagine for the hard disks in a RAID array to fail simultaneously. RAID designers use MTBF (mean time between failure) statistics from drive manufacturers and simple statistical arithmetic o calculate probabilities and risk. But they are never 100% certain, life just is not like that. In addition, you can have coding bugs in the RAID firmware – absolutely attributable to human error. Every software program has bugs in it.
